Edge-IX allows our members to benefit from professional peering services with other on-net peers – not just within a single city – but across the UK, driving down Internet traffic costs and ensuring that it is kept local.
Over the last five years, we have invested heavily in a nationwide high performance fibre network. Edge-IX exchange services are now available from all data centre locations on our network which means our customers can benefit from professional peering services. In addition, the Edge-IX service has significant national importance as it means that businesses can keep their Internet traffic local and so safeguard against security threats that could impact national data transfer routes.
Edge-IX offers conventional peering services for all IPv4 and IPv6 traffic at speeds of 100Mbps, 1Gbps and 10Gbps. We interconnect small and large Internet service providers, international content carriers, content providers, access providers and application providers.
As an Edge-IX member, you are encouraged to peer with as many Exchange members as possible to ensure the whole community gains maximum benefit from the service. We also operate a multi-lateral peering router which is an optional free service to help establish peering with members quickly and easily.
As a UK Internet exchange we recognise the exponential growth in content designed for consumer consumption in the UK. We also clearly understand the threat that can come from global distributed denial of service attacks (DDoS), and in order to help mitigate some of this threat, Edge-IX is open to any content providers globally but restricted to access providers who primarily serve the UK community. By restricting international access providers from using the exchange, we can significantly reduce the number of hosts that can be used to launch an attack on a content provider using Edge-IX as a high speed ultra low latency delivery network for the UK. This is an extremely important consideration for those organisations that rely on the Internet to do business and those that need very high bandwidth such as data centres to ensure business continuity.
